Why do platypus only live in Australia? - live platypus for sale

Monotremes like the platypus were once widespread throughout the world. Most early mammals, such as egg-layers probably Morganucodon.

However, in most places, marsupials and placental mammals successful later and she slipped out of their ecological niches, so that only a few specialized species.

Australia separated from other continents in the early Cretaceous period, and has never been colonized by the placental mammals was) (excluding bats, until recently.

The platypus has managed to survive in Australia through the operation of an ecological niche that marsupials have not gone through the situation, too.

As a semi-amphibious, feeding on aquatic organisms, the platypus has no jurisdiction of the marsupials. Marsupials, which are due to their reproductive strategy, particularly not good for an aquatic lifestyle (adapted what is difficult to go swimming for food if you have to bear their children in a pocket - which) tends to drown.

Because it is a niche that has no competition, the platypus is able to survive in Australiawhere marsupial-dominated mammals.

BTW - There is an aquatic marsupial, the yapok, South America. It may be a small number of aquatic species of marsupials in the past have been in Australia, but none was successful enough to ward off the platypus. Somewhere like North America would, the platypus had to compete with things like the otter, muskrat, including water shrews, and can not survive.

Australia is home to some of the strangest creatures on Earth. Many reasons abound. One is the idea of plate tectonics. When the continents of Pangea million years and then separated and Australia moved quickly to isolate the animals there. They had no infusion of additional DNA, that is what we have now is quite what it has always been there, without evolutionary Darwinism.
